Networking
– for universal access to mental health care

The vision of The Banyan is to universalise access to mental health care through advocacy and networks with other NGOs, professionals and public bodies. One such linkage has been the collaboration with the Sundaram Medical Foundation, whose support through the provision of medicals and free medical consultation has been vital for the functioning of The Banyan, where 4 out of 10 residents require regular prescriptions. The Banyan has also taken a strong role of advocacy with the State Government of Tamil Nadu for promoting the integration of mental health services into general health care through the District Mental Health Programme. The Dial 100 - mental health helpline is an example of the collaborations that the Banyan has undertaken with the government.

Currently the main objective is to build linkages to other NGOs across the country in order to facilitate the re-integration and after care processes. Our Resource Centre actively networks with other stakeholders in setting up mental health services for the most marginalised in different parts of the country.'
