Dial 100
- 24-hour response

In October 2004 The Banyan announced that it was unable to take in new residents, as there simply was not sufficient space for taking in additional residents. The Banyan therefore approached the government for an alternative solution, and on 23rd December 2004, The Banyan launched an exclusive 24/7 mental health emergency helpline in partnership with the police. The helpline, Dial 100, acts as a link between the public, the Chennai City Police and The Banyan, aiming to rescue wandering persons with mental illness and to provide them with immediate shelter, care and treatment at the Institute of Mental Health. The helpline is run by a helpline worker from The Banyan, who receives the emergency calls and informs a social worker from The Banyan, who goes on a rescue mission and informs the Police. The rescued individual is presented to a psychiatrist and The Joint Commissioner of the police, who interview the patient and assess the psychiatric status of the client. If the person is found to be in need of psychiatric care, a Reception Order is issued by the Commissioner and presented to IMH, where the treatment process begins. The Banyan team follow up on the health of the patient after a period of three months and help relocate the resident
