A recent evaluation study by NIMHANS
supported by Sir Ratan Tata Trust and Zurich Financial Services
UK, has provided valuable insight and direction for the development
of the services of The Banyan. The following recommendations
were made in the NIMHANS study:
- The existing mental health care systems do not cater
for people from rural, low-income backgrounds who require
mental health care accessible at the community level.
- Community-based mental health care would reduce the
financial burdens of the patients and would make it easier
to control the intake of medicine and to prevent relapses.
- The lack of localised, community based mental health
care may result in homelessness and destitution.
- There is an increasing recognition that the mentally
ill would be better served by remaining with their families
through a community based mental health programme.
Based on the recent studies and what the years have taught,
The Banyan’s future plans are geared towards expanding
its operations in order to achieve a larger impact on mental
health care for marginalised groups and to ensure universal
access to mental health care facilities. The following outreach
initiatives are under planning for the next few years
