Out of Mind, Out of Sight – Voices of the Homeless
Mentally Ill (2002)
Written by Kendra.
Foreword by Dr A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, President of India.
Out of Mind, Out of Sight narrates the story of The Banyan,
giving voice to the ‘invisible women’, homeless
women with mental illness. These are women who have wandered
away from their homes, ending up in the streets of Chennai,
sick, destitute, ignored and abused - women who have managed
to find a way out from the dark tunnel of insanity to a meaningful
existence as members of the society. Kendra visits The Banyan
as a volunteer, interviews the residents and accompanies them
on their journey back home. Out of Mind, Out of Sight is a
touching story that recounts several moving family reunions,
illustrating the power of caring and hope.
