The story of Ghulam
Ghulam was admitted into the IMH in a severe condition on May 30th, 2005, through the The Banyan's Mental Health Helpline. He had been mentally ill for 10 years, and also had a history of alcoholism. Nearly 8 months later, as he had improved and was certified fit for discharge, he was taken back to his village near Kochi, Kerala, by a team of social workers from The Banyan. Ghulam was brought to his brother's house, where the team met with his sister-in-law and his 14-year-old son. The family and the neighbours were excited to see Ghulam again. However, Ghulam's brother had passed away recently and the family were still in grief. Ghulam was devastated by this news, yet, he managed to collect himself and pacify his grief-stricken sister-in-law. The social workers counselled Ghulam, making him aware of his responsibilities towards the family as well as his own health. We have since then received a letter from Ghulam, saying that he has found a job and is doing very well.
