How you can help | Getting here | On Getting here

When I first applied to volunteer at The Banyan, I had no idea what to expect. And now that I've been here for over a month, I still never know what to expect. Most of the time 'work' at The Banyan means working away at a conference room in TBC, the administrative headquarters, but it has also brought me to the shore temples in Mahaballipuram, to a beggar's union meeting in a coastal village, and even to the dressing room of Ravi Shankar himself.

Still, I know some things to be certain: great people, a friendly and happy work environment and a good support system for your stay in Chennai. It was a great way to see Indian work culture that I would have never seen as a tourist also a fantastic way to meet people who lived in India and were able to guide you through India, as well as other foreign volunteers with whom to share your experiences. As a recent college graduate, the only work experience I had was as a restaurant manager in New Jersey. I didn't think it was much, but was happy to find that I could play a useful part in helping set up and organize a café and bed & breakfast in Kovalam to be run as another social enterprise for The Banyan. Although it had its ups and downs, my experience with The Banyan was a wonderful one and I only hope that they gained as much from my stay there as I did from working with them.

“The Banyan had met my expectations. I learn every day and am able to use my skills to help out. The environment is very vibrant and ever changing. I encourage anyone that wants to shake things up in their life and get out of their comfort zone to explore volunteer options here at The Banyan.”
