How you can help | Getting here | On Getting here |
WHEN YOU GET TO INDIA
i. Airport Pick Up
Send us your flight details and we will provide transportation from the airport upon your arrival, to your guest house. Look for the ‘The Banyan’ sign held up by one of our friendly and professional drivers.
ii. Accommodation
Your first few days here with us (maximum 5) as you acclimatize to a new place we will put you up in a ‘Friends of The Banyan’ guest house for a token donation of Rs. 150 per night.
After that you are required to move out into your new lodgings. The Banyan has helped you out with the leg work by providing a list of places nearby in different price ranges. Click here for the Accommodations Source Guide. You may book in advance from your country or scout it out once you are here. You’ll have 5 days so that should be no problem.
iii. Transportation
If you will be working at one of our facilities outside of the city, then The Banyan will provide transport to and from each day in a staff vehicle. You’ll just have to make you way to the collection point. Otherwise you are responsible for your own transportation while you are here. If it is in your budget you can hire a car and driver for your stay. We will help you arrange for that once you are here. If not, then auto rickshaws or city buses are the way to go. The staff will help you orient you on that. Taking an auto to and from work will vary between Rs. 80- 200 per day depending on the location of your accommodation. The bus is far cheaper at about Rs 6 per ride, again depending upon distance traveled, and even more of an experience!
iv. Where to Eat
Three meals a day are provided by The Banyan. There are also many, cafes, and restaurants around for variety. Please do not be adventurous and eat at roadside stalls and tea shops unless you want the ‘loosies’. Hygiene cannot be guaranteed. Be prepared to eat with your hands. Actually make that your hand. Make sure you use your right only. Google this to understand why!
It is important NOT to drink the tap water. Don’t even brush your teeth with it and make sure you close your mouth in the shower. Litre bottles of branded mineral water are available at most shops for about Rs. 10 and ‘canned’ water, like used in water coolers universally, is available when you are at The Banyan centers.
v. Help!
Don’t worry. The staff really wants you to be here and will help you out with adjusting. You can call on me, The Volunteer Case Manager for anything and if I can help you I will find you someone who can.
