What to Pack…hmmmm
1. What do I wear when I’m there?
Modest, loose, light-weight summer attire is preferred. Modest western wear is acceptable however the Indian clothing is much more suitable for the culture and climate. Ladies cover your mid rift and no cleavage please. Capri pants or long pants are acceptable but please no shorts, tight t-shirts, tube tops, short skirts (you get it right?).
An outfit here can cost anywhere from $10-$30. However, you may want to purchase 1 set of Indian clothes before you arrive in India. For men, you might like a lightweight cotton suit referred to as a "pajama suit". For ladies, the best choice is a lightweight cotton tunic and pants outfit referred to as a "salwar kameez" or "punjabi". You may be able to find Indian clothes in Indian districts of your nearest city.
Sandals that can be easily removed are best as usually you are required to remove them before going into people’s homes. You may wear them in the Banyan offices and on projects however. Either bring your favorite pair or buy some here as they are really inexpensive.
2. What else do I pack?
- Bring your usual toiletries as a lot of international brands are available here but not all
- Sunglasses
- Sunscreen
- Small flashlight
- Adaptor for your electronic devices- laptop etc
- Batteries for all you electronic devices- Indian batteries are very low quality
- High quality mosquito repellent. A definite MUST!
- Kleenex or baby wipes for bathroom use (there is generally no toilet paper)
- Pre-moistened towelettes - antibacterial wipes would be a good choice!
- Band-Aids and triple antibiotic ointment
- Cortisone cream for insect bites
- Tylenol or other acetaminophen brand or any NSAID like aleve, motrin etc
- Foot powder- to use on cleaned feet before you go to bed- staves off any infection from walking around in sandals
- Contact lens solution if required
- All of the above are available here (except for the batteries) but best to have a stash with you instead of going out and finding it all
- Don’t forget to bring photos, recipes, and other small mementos from home as the people you meet will be interested and curious about your home life
- If you take any medications, make sure you have at least a 1 week supply in excess of what you are scheduled for your trip
