How you can help | Getting here | On Getting here
Sheryl Roman

I have done volunteer work off and on in my adult life. I have worked with seniors at local senior center; the visually impaired; I worked with an organization called La Sabranenque in France that rebuilds med-evil villages and I worked with Habitat for Humanity in New Orleans after the Katrina hurricane.

After returning from New Orleans I realized I wanted to continue doing more volunteer work for longer periods of time. I made the decision to leave my job of nine years to explore the option of volunteering overseas. I then started looking for opportunities where I could apply my work experience which is Human Resources. I went to the website Idealist.org and found The Banyan. The Banyan was looking for a volunteer in their HR department.

The Banyan attracted me because I believe my experience could help create and build an HR platform that is suitable for the organizational culture. I wanted to be where I can add value to the situation and learn. My management style is very much hands-on and I do not believe there is any task that is beneath me. I like to dig in and look at the details while keeping focus on the big picture. My only expectation was to have a major learning experience all around.

The Banyan had met my expectations. I learn every day and am able to use my skills to help out. The environment is very vibrant and ever changing. I encourage anyone that wants to shake things up in their life and get out of their comfort zone to explore volunteer options here at The Banyan. You will never be bored and anything you can contribute will make an impact on someone's life.

TESTIMONIALS

“When I first applied to volunteer at The Banyan, I had no idea what to expect. And now that I've been here for over a month, I still never know what to expect….. Still, I know some things to be certain: great people, a friendly and happy work environment and a good support system for your stay in Chennai.”
